Scripta geologica publishes original papers and monographs dealing with the various branches of vertebrate and invertebrate palaeontology, palaeobotany/palynology, stratigraphy, petrology and mineralogy, including gemmology. The journal appears twice per calendar year, although it may be supplemented by special (thematic) issues. Each issue has its own serial number.
The focus of the journal is systematics, although papers on all aspects of the subjects listed above are welcomed. the majority of publications in scripta geologica are the result of research projects of the Nederlands Centrum voor Biodiversiteit Naturalis in leiden, or are based mainly or entirely on specimens in the collections of the museum. Other papers are accepted, very rarely, at the Managing Editor's discretion. Only original papers that have not been submitted or published elsewhere will be considered for publication.
The first issue of Scripta geologica, the official journal of the former Rijksmuseum van Geologie en Mineralogie, founded in 1820, appeared in 1971. It is the follow-up of Sammlungen des Geologische Rijksmuseums in Leiden (1. serie, volumes i-x, 2. serie, volumes i-ii, 1881-1923, and Leidsche Geologische Mededelingen, volumes 1-52, 1925-1983).
Scripta geologica is indexed in the Pascal database of Inist, in Geobase, in Geo Abstracts and in GeoRef.
The printed and electronic version is published by NCB Naturalis, ISSN 1876-2077 (electronic version) ISSN 0375-7587 (printed version).
